XIV.

April 20th Today we approach Grand Central Lake and encounter some very precipitous places to get over. Chaining is consequently very difficult. We run about 1/2 a mile and while returning to camp run across a bear in a cave which we proceed to barricade in until one man has time to go to camp for a rifle: then begins the fun bang!! goes the first shot. Bruin is heard to growl and grind his teeth another bang but no bruin. With some clubs we poke around the cave finding emptiness in all corners except one where the dying animal lays after some time we get him out and a most magnificent she-bear is seen the band playing "Tra-ra-ra" we return to our habitation.
