infantry outposts. We got a simple wonderful reception from the "Civies" they went almost "batty" with joy to see us, as of course they have led a dog's life the last four years. Curiously enough the town is almost entirely intact, the only one that I have see lately, though I believe in the vicinity there are a good many in more or less decent shape.

The Boche devoted his time to blowing up main roads and cross roads, so as to hold up our transport and he certainly left some terrible craters in the roads believe me, however its wonderful how quickly the transports get over these obstacles in spite of the mess. "F" Battery were the first into this town and I and another officer were in charge of the billeting arrangements
