Aug 21. News came today that Brussels had fallen to the Germans & later that a big victory over the French troups had taken place somewhere between [Uetz] & Vogesen(?) The city decorated with flags, church bells rung & in evening crowds cheering, singing national songs & hyms etc. Partial eclipse of the sun. Japan has sent an ultimatum to Germany to remove her ships from Kaichan (Aug 15?)
