are very glad to see us and bring out fruit coffee etc and think that we will keep them, but I am sorry to say we have not been able to do much for them. This is a beautiful town and if full of troops of all kinds I expect that there will be a big fight here soon, of course I cant say where we are or have been but you will be surprised when you do hear.

We have shot down 3 of their aeroplanes already and yesterday one of our aeroplanes was chasing theirs but I did not hear whether they got it.

BC Archives, MS-0455 Box 1 File 1 MEARES, Cecil Henry, 1877 – 1937. Victoria; traveler, British military officer. Predominantly selected letters and cards from Meares to his fiancée, Lola Spengler, 1914 – 1918.
