2/ the Devil today some of the boys are playing cards at the door while others are writing & some asleep they are all pretty tired we have been in the trenches every night since we came here and are going in again tonight. Our Batteries are pounding the hell out of Old Fritz today and shells are dropping all around us just now one burst within seventy feet of our dugout we are in an old village that has at one time been a pretty place but is nothing more than a pile of Bricks mortar and all kinds of debris. It is sure some sight to be out in the First lines at night one would think he was at some big fire works display such as Dommion day or the fourth of July Sky Rockets and Big Star Shells going up all round
