Strangers to England or Scotland often return to France after leave & say that the people of England do not know that a war is on. That is one of the most foolish & untrue things ever said. But it is true to say that by eyesight alone you could not tell that England is at war. But the war & the men in France are never out of the minds of 99 9/10/100 of the people. Of course there are a few, perhaps more than a few of shirkers but in the main all G. Britain is at war. Every one is so kind, Londoners proper are never tired of trying to help a soldier; they do wait to be asked but if they think you are in need of direction they will cross & street & ask if they can be of use. This means Merchant princes Rich or poor. Dames Plain or pretty girls Working men & school children
