My letter writing has been neglected lately.  You may take it for granted that if my letters fall off it is because conditions are good and not bad.  It is really difficult to write when one is out of the line except for the first day or two.  In the trenches especially when taking night duty it is easier in every way to write.  The Bn is in the line now but I am out again, still quite out in comfortable billets with those officers + men who not required in the trenches.  I had to prosecute an officer at a general ct martial the other day - a formidable affair.  For a criminal trial is nothing to a G.C.M for technicalities + formalities.  The officers got off but I am glad to say all my procedure was upheld

My dear brother

My letter writing has been neglected lately. You may take it for granted that if my letters fall off it is because conditions are good and not bad. It is really difficult to write when one is out of the line except for the first day or two. In the trenches especially when taking night duty it is easier in every way to write. The Bn is in the line now but I am out again, still quite out in comfortable billets with those officers + men who not required in the trenches. I had to prosecute an officer at a general ct martial the other day - a formidable affair. For a criminal trial is nothing to a G.C.M for technicalities + formalities. The officer got off but I am glad to say all my procedure was upheld
