Then comes the march forward through the night & rain & mud, the shells becoming more & more numerous & more & more dangerous. The roar of our own batteries deafening & shocking us all the while until we advance into the curtain of the indirect fire of machine guns. At this stage we take to communication trenches if any are to be had & force our way past those going the other way, rushing the exposed parts & halting to take breath in the more sheltered places. Then the final halt in some horrible place under hot fire with casualties occurring rather fast.
