Dear Lindley

I am writing this in a front line trench which we have just taken from the Germans after a pretty wild time. I was not in the actual attack because in a way it was my turn to be left out but at the very start I got orders to go in at literally five minutes notice to take the place of a casualty so here I am.

The men interest themselves keenly in the souvenirs they find in the trenches. Officers belongings are of course most highly prized - German officers generally carry a very small vest pocket Browning - their helmets also are much sought after
