have not done many things which I should have regretted sorely.

While also I have done many things that I know others with their limited means of knowledge would have & have condemned me for. On those accounts I feel no regret. I feel no regret whatever but only sincere enjoyment of the memories they give me. My faith is absolute sure not in the dogmas but rather in the doctrines of the Christian religion and I have never distanced from myself my final accountability.

For you have done & are doing for me and mine I can only thank you for I expect nothing less of you. The horrors of this war came just as keenly to my perception some months before it began as they do now. Why, I can't say but it is true.

It seemed clear to me then that the war which seemed then to be inevitable would be unparalleled in ferocity and in extent but I still hope & believe that the end will on the whole be favourable to our Empire though
