About 1.35 am on the 20th I visited No 1b Stall [?], 2n West Level, where two [?] chinamen were employed repairing the roof, the deceased [?] Young gow was one of the chinamen who was helping Saw Dow [?] to put up a stringer.

I stayed with them for a few minutes in their first attempt to put it up the leg of the stringer on the fast [?] side was too long, they took it down to shorten the leg when I left them to complete my round.  I saw Young gow again about 2.30 a.m. in a [?], he was apparently dead.

My name is John C Brown. The slits [?[ in the roof were not visible, by being invisible it was more dangerous than appeared, I had sufficient [?] by Mr [?] Graham - There was no attempt to brush [?] the roof, the stringer was for the purpose of reinforcing those already in ..
