when requested by Mr. Wardle and others to assist in placing the body in a coffin makes me suspicious of him. There were two other Chinese present at the above mentioned time but they assisted willingly and without showing any signs of fear or reluctance. My theory of the affair is that the two Chinese had a quarrel at noon or when Ah Leong returned to the work (I think at noon) about his eating the potatoes or about the cattle breaking into the field and that the accused Ah Leong struck the deceased with whatever weapon he had in his hand (probably an axe or garden hoe) and then reported the matter at Hope. I have made a thorough search for the weapon but have not been able to find it. I will go down to the ranch this afternoon and make another search before I return to Lytton.
