Dear Fred,

I have been going to drop you a line for some time but really those Germans have kept me so busy of late I did not have time Well, we had some reception on our first appearance in the firing line, to tell you the truth for a few hours I did not know whether I was in a snow storm or somewhere else, but now I don't mind it a bit as a matter of fact one feels kind of lonesome when there is no shooting going on. Occasionally the Germans would send over one of those big shells and scatter a few yards of muck and dirt on us to let us know they were there. Our trenches are less
