at this time of year trench boots to the [rule?] are not necessary & in bad weather high gum boots are generally issued. I have however been fitted for a pair of high boots in England so that I can send for them if necessary. We all [?] the future with [aquain?] if not cheerfulness though it has been carefully impressed on us that undue humanity toward the enemy is as much a mistake as undue zeal.

While enjoying something to eat this morning at Lady Isabelle Egertous canteen here a clergyman offered to show us round the sights. Later on, after we had had a sorely needed bath & shave, we met him again & found that he was Canon Jocelyn Perkins who was doing YMCA
